This map was created using data from the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority in Australia, overlayed with a worldwide political boundary basemap. Features were mapped using the World Robinson projection. The assignment for this map included added narrative text and using colors to effectively convey ideas. I incorporated a text box with an explanation of the map’s main goal, which is to show that there are areas within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park that are accessible to vessels but that those areas are very limited due to the sensitive nature of the surrounding environment. Looking at this map, it becomes clear that there is a buffer zone of exclusion around the reef itself, but between the reef and the shoreline it is possible for a ship to travel.

Original map is 8.5 x 11 inches. Click here for full-size pdf.
